SNOWSHOE TREK ALONG LAKE SUPERIOR'S NORTH SHORE From February 2 - 13 Gary McGuffin and Rob Mullen (on right) were part of a four-man team exploring the newly designated Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area in the area of Nipigon Bay and St. Ignace Island. In addition to highlighting the beauty and recreational opportunities of the NMCA this expedition will provide the sort of intimate exposure to the boreal winter environment that our canoe expeditions do for summer and fall.
OCTOBER 25, 2007 PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER announces the largest protected expanse of fresh water in the world with the formation of the LAKE SUPERIOR NATIONAL MARINE CONSERVATION AREA Prime Minister Harper with Gary, Joanie and Sela McGuffin on October 25 at the announcement of Canada's fourth NMCA. The McGuffins have been in the forefront of the effort to protect the north shore of Lake Superior with this designation for over 15 years. WREAF's 2007 Lake Superior expedition was the final awareness raising publicity event that helped to put the effort over the top.

WREAF crew to rendezvous with the Innu Nation and Smithsonian archaeological field team The Innu Nation in Goose Bay Labrador has invited us to send crews to their encampments at Lake Kamestastin for the spring and autumn caribou migrations. The Mushua - Innu have encamped at Lake Kamestastin for over 7,500 years. The lake is the center of a meteor impact crater some 38 million years old. On the south side of the crater there is enough shelter from the wind for trees to grow, creating an island of Boreal Forest in a sea of tundra. The resulting concentration of shelter and food creates a powerful wildlife magnet and is why the George River caribou herd funnels through the area every April and October. Our crew is going in by bush plane from Goose Bay on October 2 and will stay until October 14.
Lake Kamestastin is east of the George River and for a subsequent expedition we will run the De Pas River from Schefferville to the George and then cross over to Kamestastin with local Innu from the Tshiskapisk Foundation

The town on Nipigon, Ontario gave the NMCA "Snow Walkers" a heroes' welcome when the expedition returned to Scandia House: dinner with the Mayor and leading citizens, plaques from the HarbourMaster for "Crossing the Line at 49", speeches and heartwarming hospitality.
Ontario Tourism and Mountain Equipment Co-op Sponsor Sept 2008 Slate Islands Expedition Building on the two previous expeditions within what is now the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area, we are pleased to be again paddling with Steve Bruno of Ontario Tourism. Ontario Tourism is funding the expedition and MEC is providing clothing and equipment. The expedition leaves Terrance Bay, Ontario for a five day stay on the Slate Islands, home of an endemic herd of caribou. This will be an interesting opportunity to compare and contrast the small isolated herd on these islands with the world's largest herd in Labrador in October. The crew will include: Steve Bruno Gary McGuffin Joanie McGuffin Sila McGuffin Rob Mullen Bonnie Rowell
